What Is IPTV and How Does It Work?

·6 min read

The path of an IPTV stream from the server to the device

IPTV means television delivered over the internet rather than by satellite or cable. The name stands for Internet Protocol Television; in practice it means you connect to the broadcast with a device you already own, with no dish, no decoder and no cable contract.

How is it different from satellite?

Satellite is one-way: the dish receives a signal and you watch it. IPTV works both ways — the device talks to the server and only the channel you opened is sent down. That is why catch-up, a film library and reordering channels to suit yourself are possible at all.

What do you need?

  • An internet connection: 10 Mbit for HD, 25 Mbit or more for 4K.
  • A device: Smart TV, phone, tablet, computer or TV box.
  • A player app and the login details you were given.

How long does setup take?

A minute or two to install the app and another minute to type the details. The first channel list can take half a minute to arrive depending on its size. The whole thing rarely passes five minutes.

What decides picture quality?

Three things: the quality of the source, your internet speed and the stability of the connection. The third is the one people miss — a fluctuating line causes more freezing than a high but irregular one.

Is IPTV the same as a streaming platform?

Technically both deliver video over the internet, but the business models differ. Platforms like Netflix produce or license their own catalogue and offer only that. IPTV gives access to television channels: live broadcast, sport, news and local stations. Most people use both, because neither replaces the other.

Which devices does it run on?

What does it cost per month?

Monthly plans start in the low tens of euros and the effective monthly cost falls sharply with longer terms: a twelve-month plan often works out at roughly a quarter of the single-month price. Comparing headline prices alone is misleading — look at how many devices, which server and how much support the same money buys.

Three questions that keep coming up

Do I need technical knowledge to set it up?

No. You install an app and fill in three fields. Where you get stuck, the support line walks you through screen by screen; most setups finish in under ten minutes.

Can two televisions use the same account?

It depends on your plan. On a single-connection subscription the first device drops when the second opens. For two screens you need a two-connection plan.

What happens if my internet drops?

The stream stops; your subscription is unaffected. When the connection returns the app carries on from where it was, with nothing to reinstall.
