IPTV in Switzerland: Fast Lines, Expensive TV

Swiss connection speed against local subscription cost

Connection quality in Switzerland is among the best in Europe: fibre is widespread, speeds are high and stability is rarely an issue. The other side of the equation is price — local television subscriptions and the broadcasting fee sit clearly above neighbouring countries.

The network

Even in mountain cantons fibre coverage is surprisingly good. If you are getting freezing here, the cause is almost certainly home Wi-Fi; line-related problems are rare in Switzerland.

How to compare the cost properly

Setting a local TV package beside an IPTV subscription on monthly price alone leaves things out. The local package also carries box rental, installation and a contract; IPTV has none of those and the device is already yours. The comparison that means something is total annual cost.

The broadcasting fee

Every household in Switzerland pays the Serafe broadcasting fee, regardless of whether you watch television at all. An IPTV subscription does not change that obligation; neither stands in for the other.

Server and local channels

The European server. Swiss channels such as SRF 1, SRF zwei and RTS are in the list. In the Turkish communities around Zurich, Basel and Geneva, one subscription covers both languages.
