How Much Data Does IPTV Use Per Hour?

On a capped line or over mobile data this is the first question to ask: how much data does an hour of watching use? The answer is not a single number — it follows the resolution and the bitrate of the stream.

How the figure is worked out
Bitrate tells you how many megabits arrive each second. To turn it into hourly data, divide by 8 for megabytes and multiply by 3600: an 8 Mbit Full HD stream uses roughly 3.6 GB an hour. The ranges in the table vary with the quality of the channel; two channels at the same resolution do not necessarily use the same data.
Watching on a limited line
- 01Fix the quality manuallyAutomatic quality selection climbs to the highest option whenever the connection allows and burns through a cap quickly. Fixing it to HD in the player halves consumption.
- 02Stop background playbackPocketing the phone without closing the app does not stop the stream; data keeps flowing. When you are done watching on a phone, exit the app completely.
- 03Keep 4K to a wired lineA 4K stream wants more than 8 GB an hour. On mobile data a single match eats a meaningful share of a monthly allowance on its own.
- 04Check your allowance mid-monthLooking at the remaining data in your operator's app beats a line that is throttled at the end of the month. If it is running low, dropping the quality one step is usually enough.
Does home broadband need this maths?
On an unlimited home line this calculation barely matters; the constraint there is speed, not volume. Five hours of Full HD a day is small next to the capacity of a fibre or VDSL line. The figures matter on mobile data and on capped packages.
The effective way to cut data use is lowering the resolution, not shrinking the buffer. The buffer only decides how far ahead the player downloads; total consumption stays the same.
